Coach for College: Vietnam

Nothing I expected, but everything I could have asked for. To say this trip has been life-changing would be an understatement. I am forever indebted to Vietnam and Coach for College for giving me the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of so many kids; kids who otherwise lack the care and guidance that a positive role model provides. Kids who long for the intimacy of a personal relationship. Kids who have made just as much of an impact on my life, as I have on theirs. I came to Vietnam to teach, but the lessons I’ve learned along the way are far more valuable than anything I could ever learn in a classroom.

I thought I had a pretty good idea about what this “whole life thing” means… until I came here. I’ve learned more about myself in these past three weeks than I even care to admit. I will never again complain about “how hard I have it” or how “life isn’t fair.” I’ve met students who bike up to an hour in the Vietnam heat to get to school before our 7am start time. The vast majority of kids don’t live with their parents. Twelve year olds will tell you they don’t think they’ll be able to stay in school because they have to start working pretty soon, so their family can have enough money to make ends meet. Some kids are already working. One student of mine bikes 45 minutes to and from school, only to go home and immediately start his daily work on the rice farm. The point is this – these kids taught me what it means to be resilient.

At the end of long days of teaching, coaching and lesson planning, the coaches finally get the chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you I made nine lifelong friends in a matter of three weeks, but that’s what happened. I’ve formed bonds and friendships with student-athletes from all over the USA. I will forever cherish the memories made here. The kids, the coaches, the culture: all three now have a special place in my heart.

It’s been a ride, but I’m ready to get back to Bloomington and start training again with the boys. Go IU!
